Have a guess on which sport is more popular: Table Tennis and Tennis? I would bet that over 90% population would say 'Tennis' without having second thoughts. Well, they are wrong. Table Tennis is by far the most beloved racket sport worldwide. Way over ten million players meet up commonly in sanctioned tournaments to compete against each other. And that's an valid evaluation on registered players, that doesn't count in all the hobby pongers using table tennis as their selection for recreational sports activities.

But as we all know, it still has an image of not being a 'real' sport, especially in comparison to and with customary American sports like Football, Basketball or Baseball. In my notion that is equally unfortunate as unjustified. I am German and if there is such a thing as a customary German sport, then it must be Soccer. And I have been playing Soccer in a German league for many years semi professionally. When I was 16 years old, I friend of mine turned me on to Table Tennis and shortly after that, I joined a club, got a coach and started to play on a regular basis, at least four times a week. Once you get past the basics, like for example regular counter strokes, the techniques come to be more advanced.

At the same time, your game get's more and more sophisticated and faster. Ergo, more difficult and strenuous. One practicing session typically spans over two hours and consists of any sections, each with emphasis on a distinct kind skill. That could be footwork, acceleration, touch, expectation and many more. A common convention used by a lot of coaches is the so called "many balls" training. The coach use a whole pail full of balls and hits them over to your side of the table in high frequencies, during which he also alternates the placement of the balls, the spin and speed (which can exceed 100mph).

Nowadays, the use of ball robots has come to be more popular. Of course, the robot can't give you guidance or strict you on the mistakes you make, but it can fill in if you can't get way to a coach or training partner.

Well, as an Usatt registered member with a ranting of 2150, I can assure you that table tennis is a high level workout sport and easily ranks up there with Tennis and Soccer. After two hours of many ball drills, I am commonly ready for a hot shower, a good meal and some deep sleep.
